She has been a member of the Quilter’s Guild and the Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsmen. Katharine’s work has been featured in various magazines both British and American, and in her books. She is a regular contributor to current local and national quilt exhibitions, most recently in September 2009 she was a guest exhibitor Quilters’ Guild Show at Hever Castle, Kent, ‘The Festival of Quilts’ Birmingham 2003, where one of her entries won a first in its category, and in 2007 she was an invited exhibitor at that festival. Her work was in ‘Rise and Shine’ a juried exhibition at the Devon Guild shop in Bovey Tracey, Devon in 2001, the Quilters’ Guild exhibition held at Lords Cricket Ground London in 1999, and The American Quilters’ Society Exhibition in Paducah, Kentucky. U.S.A. She also works as an occasional consultant exhibition organiser for Forge Mill Needle Museum and for five years taught on the City and Guilds patchwork and quilting course at Hereford Art College.

Her work draws on the traditional motifs of pieced patchwork, developing them to give a contemporary feel. An interest in all the Decorative Arts is the motivation which provides the incentive to attempt to create textiles which are original and collectable.

This two day worksop features Duffy”s personal favourite bag for taking away with her as it holds so much! This is a large bag. With 3 large pockets. Two on the outside an one on the inside. It gives you plenty of space to put in books, iPad, and  a lot of other stuff. The bag could also be used as a school bag.  Because it is so large and has 3 zipper pockets, you will need at least two days. The appliqué that is on the flap you will need to make in advance. There are a lot of patterns which you will be able to choose from. The measurement for the bag is: 14  by 11 inches, and 5 inches wide. Anyone who has previously attended Duffy’s workshops  will know that you will be guaranteed a real fun time, hence you’ll need to book early.

Yes she’s back from Belgium, this time with Two new bags for us.The first is a very practical bag. You can wear it on your shoulder or across your chest, so your hands can be free. There is plenty of space inside so you can put lots of things into it. It also has a small zipper pocket on the inside. Shouldn’t all bags have one?!  You can personalize your bag by making the flap and sides in a patchwork quilt design that you like best. The measurements of the bag are  11” by 12” and 3.5” wide.

A traditional favourite, we will make this 18″ block by piecing with freezer paper. This would make an ideal cushion cover or perhaps the centre of a medallion quilt. This workshop has been very much requested so make sure you book early.

This NEW ongoing course is aimed at those with some experience who would like to try something a little more adventurous. Each of the nine blocks uses a different technique and is placed on point. We will use the quilt as you go method making it fun to complete and block and quilt it before the next session (only if you want to). This way we get to explore different ways the blocks could be quilted as we do them. These blocks are then sashed and assembled into a diamond. Next year we will add a pieced border and add the four corners. This years fees are payable in 2 sums, one of £100 payable in advance and the other of £80 payable in July. If you miss a session for any reason all instructions will be given to you.

Curtains can be very expensive to have made and appear cheaper to buy “off the peg” only to discover that they don’t fit properly. Learn how to make your own. You will be given instruction in the basics of measuring windows to work out the correct yardage then making a small sample from start to finish.You do not require any special equipment  so go on take the fear out of dressing your own windows and sign up for the day.

Based on the Bethany Reynolds book this fun technique will give you at least a lap quilt or maybe more. I have heard many utter that this process is very wasteful of fabric, but I have not found this to be the case. I will show you how I used all my fabric.This is truly a magical method changing the original fabric into different blocks resembling a kaleidoscope. Be warned this can be very addictive and may find you itching to make more than one quilt

We had a really wonderful response to our Quilt show in July, raising £2500 over the two days which does not include the Prize Quilt raffle which is still ongoing till the 16th December. Thank you to everybody who helped in so many ways. Along with other fund raising we sent just under £3000 to the orphanage in Thailand. We had a letter back recently to say that although the building is safe, the roads and surrounding homes have been washed away in the dreadful floods. The orphanage is therefore also being used as a refuge for the homeless! …and we think we are going through hard times!

We have a wonderful new Lynette Anderson fabric coming in very shortly from Lecien. If her last, “Scandinavian Christmas” was anything to go by it won’t be in the shop very long. Also starting in January, we will be running a block of the month “William Morris” by In the Beginning Fabrics, please call for details. As you know we have new fabrics coming in all the time so don’t be too long before you pay us another visit.

During the next 11 years she also worked part time for the Camden Adult Education Institute (I.L.E.A) and Wandsworth Adult College and at weekends worked for Andrea Coggins, professional quilter for Rainbow Quilts. From 1985 Ruth made her first annual trip to Southern Ireland and soon started to write the first of many new sewing machine courses for The Quilt Art Workshops in Naas. She has given teacher training instruction, Adult Education and City & Guilds tuition for Kent, Surrey, Richmond, Kensington & Chelsea, South Thames, Westminster and Tooting Adult Education Colleges.

Ruth has been freelance since November 1992 and is constantly busy giving tuition all over the U.K and Ireland. Any spare time is devoted to devising additional and exciting new courses, developing techniques and experimenting with numerous sewing machines and the latest sewing Computers. SEW TECH Tuition Services offer a full range of ever increasing courses and workshops including the 5-day courses she originally devised for Bogod Machine Company in 1988.

Ruth worked with Annette Claxton on her book Quick Quilts in 1996 and since then has developed a series of machine patchwork and additional quilting courses for beginners and more experienced quilters.

From October 2001 to July 2005 she had a regular column in the Quilters’ Guild of Ireland newsletter ‘Ask Ruth’ and has written for various magazines including a 7 Part article for Sewing World in 2004 “Best Foot Forward”.
